My Career
Career Background
I started out auditing nonprofits at Henry & Horne in Scottsdale — compiling financial statements, working employee benefit plan audits, and presenting results straight to boards of directors. It's a solid first job for someone who works in accounting but I ended up in software, it's where I learned that a financial statement is only useful if the person reading it actually trusts the process behind it. That's stuck with me longer than any technical skill I've picked up since.
From there I moved into corporate accounting — a senior accountant role at Sims Metal Management doing consolidated financials and variance analysis, then a similar seat at Global Water Management handling close, AP aging, and fixed asset schedules. Good grounding, but repetitive in a way that made me restless.
I landed at Workiva (WebFilings at the time) in 2011 and stayed 11 years, which tells you something about how much the role kept changing under me. I came in reviewing XBRL filings and teaching customers to read the US GAAP taxonomy — genuinely painstaking work, catching EFM violations before a filing deadline. From there I moved through program management, then solutions architecture, where I was building data schemas and REST API integrations and writing the SQL queries that powered customer reporting. Eventually I ran client services teams, then a product tooling team, working directly with engineers in an agile environment to ship the internal software that helped onboard new customers faster.
By the end of my time at Workiva I wasn't just implementing anymore — I was building the tools and training the people who did the implementing.
In 2022 I moved to Citrin Cooperman (through its acquisition of Clearview Group), first as an Implementation Manager and then as Director of GRC & Integration Solutions. That role was less hands-on-keyboard and more hands-on: coaching and developing implementation managers and solutions architects, building multi-year implementation roadmaps, and presenting directly to C-suite executives to close six-figure, multi-solution Workiva contracts.
Across all of it, the thread has been the same: take something manual and fragile, make it repeatable, and make sure the people who have to run it every quarter actually understand it. That's what I'm doing now on my own — for Workiva partners who need an experienced subcontractor, and for businesses here in Gunnison County who've never touched Workiva but have the exact same underlying problem.
